The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports a surge in electricity consumption by the building sector in 2024.

In 2023, the change in volume amounted to 162 terawatt hours (TWh), while in 2024 it reached 629 TWh.

Percentage-wise, electricity consumption in this sector grew by 5% in 2024. The IEA also notes that demand quadrupled last year and contributed almost 60% of the total growth in electricity consumption. This is attributed to the widespread use of air conditioners (ACs).

Electricity consumption in the industrial sector also increased by almost 4%. The change in volume was 336 TWh in 2023 and 407 TWh in 2024. Consumption in 2024 contributed almost 40% of the total growth in electricity demand.

Furthermore, electricity consumption in the transportation sector saw changes of 40 TWh each in 2023 and 2024. Growth in this sector reached 8% in 2024.

"The continued increase in electric vehicle use is boosting electricity consumption in the transportation sector," the IEA wrote.
