According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), domestic wholesale car sales reached 74,160 units in July 2024.
This volume is down 7.9% year-on-year (YoY) compared to July 2023, which recorded 80,504 wholesale units.
Cumulatively, Indonesian wholesale car sales from January to July 2024 totaled 484,236 units.
This figure is also down 17.5% compared to the same period in the previous year (cumulative-to-cumulative/CTC), which recorded 586,931 wholesale units.
Gaikindo Secretary General Kukuh Kumara cited several factors contributing to the sluggish domestic car sales.
“The rupiah exchange rate plummeted, exceeding Rp16,000 [in July 2024]. Just last week it was at Rp15,000 and relatively high,” said Kukuh, as reported by KatadataOto on Monday (August 12, 2024).
Furthermore, he noted that income increases for some middle-class citizens were only around 3%, while car prices rose by more. Despite this, Kukuh stated that car sales have improved in the last two months and are gradually recovering.
“There has been an improvement in June-July 2024; hopefully, August will see further improvement,” he said.
In July 2024, Toyota remained the top-selling car manufacturer in Indonesia with 27,126 wholesale units.
This was followed by Daihatsu and Honda, which recorded 13,910 and 6,249 wholesale units respectively.
