Can the 2019 Grand Livina Restore Nissan's Glory?

PT Nissan Motor Indonesia launched its newest vehicles, the All New Grand Livina and Serena C27, on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. The 2019 Grand Livina falls into the Low Multi Purpose Vehicle (LMPV) segment and will compete with the Xpander (Mitsubishi), Avanza (Toyota), Ertiga (Suzuki), Xenia (Daihatsu), and Mobilio (Honda). Meanwhile, the Nissan Serena C27 is categorized as a premium MPV and will compete with the Toyota Voxy.

The arrival of these two new Nissan models is expected to boost its domestic sales. As is known, sales of the Japanese automotive manufacturer have been declining since 2013, after the boom of the Grand Livina at that time.

In 2012, Nissan's sales reached 67,000 units, or about 6% of total national car sales. However, after that, Nissan's car sales continued to fall, reaching only 25,000 units (2.5%) in 2015 and further declining to only 6,000 units (0.6%) in 2018. The emergence of new car models and the entry of Chinese automotive manufacturers, such as Wuling, have eroded Nissan's market share in the domestic market.
