The Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) reported that domestic and export sales of motorcycles increased again in October 2022. In the previous month, sales of two-wheeled vehicles had decreased following the increase in fuel prices.
Domestic motorcycle sales reached 537,587 units in October 2022, a 4.49% increase (month-on-month/mom) compared to September 2022, which saw 514,460 units sold.
This achievement also represents a 20.88% increase (year-on-year/yoy) compared to October 2021 sales of 444,726 units.
Domestic motorcycle sales in October 2022 were also the highest throughout the year-to-date (ytd) period. In 2021, the highest sales figure was 521,424 units, recorded in March.
Similar to domestic sales, motorcycle exports also increased. In October 2022, export sales volume reached 75,368 units, a slight increase of 0.47% (mom). However, year-on-year (yoy), sales decreased by 6.17%.
In total, domestic motorcycle sales from January to October 2022 reached 4,149,947 units. Meanwhile, total motorcycle exports from Indonesia reached 643,828 units during the same period.
AISI is optimistic that domestic motorcycle sales can reach 5 million units by the end of the year. Furthermore, the association claims that the semiconductor chip crisis in the country has now been resolved by motorcycle manufacturers.
"We are optimistic (domestic motorcycle sales) can reach 5.1 million to 5.4 million units (by the end of the year). Because the chip problem has been resolved in August 2022," said AISI Chairman Johannes Loman, as quoted by Kompas.com on Thursday (10/11/2022).
"If we look at the data from the Ministry of Industry processed by AISI, the market (sales in the market) per month is already in the 500,000-unit range again," said Johannes.
Based on category, scooter motorcycle sales contributed the most, both to domestic and export sales in October 2022. Scooter sales contributed 87.75% of total domestic sales and 69.63% of total exports.
Underbone motorcycle sales contributed 6.46% of total domestic sales and 10.35% of total exports.
Meanwhile, the proportion of sport motorcycle sales was recorded at 5.79% of total domestic sales and 20.03% of total exports.
