Amidst the Energy Crisis, Indonesian Coal Exports to the European Union Soar by 68%

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that Indonesia's coal exports to Europe in September showed positive performance. The export value soared 68% compared to the previous month, reaching US$161.69 million.

According to Bank Indonesia (BI) records, the value of Indonesian coal exports to Europe in August 2022 was US$96.21 million. The increase in export value in September 2022 occurred amidst the energy crisis threatening Europe due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

"Based on our export records, the value of coal exports to the European Union in September 2022 is the highest in the last four years," said BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Setianto in an online press conference on Monday (October 17).

The increase in coal export value to the region was mainly due to shipments to Poland and other European countries. The value of coal exports to Poland last month reached US$63.36 million, surging 95.47% month-on-month.

A significant increase also occurred in the Netherlands, with a value of US$55.85 million from zero exports the previous month. However, there was a 4.31% month-on-month decrease in coal exports to Italy.

In total, Indonesia's coal export value decreased by 4.5% last month to US$4.2 billion. This decrease contributed to the overall 10.99% month-on-month decline in national export value last month.
