Indonesia's trade value with Qatar in 2016 reached US$915 million, equivalent to Rp12.17 trillion at an exchange rate of Rp13,300 per US dollar. This figure increased by 10.46 percent compared to the previous year, which was US$828.34 million. Indonesia's imports from Qatar reached US$857.45 million, while exports amounted to only US$57.55 million. By the first quarter of 2017, the trade value between the two countries fell by 8.47 percent to US$180.35 million.
Indonesia's trade with Qatar is relatively smaller compared to Indonesia's trade with other Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt. However, Indonesia-Qatar trade is larger than Indonesia-Bahrain trade, which was only US$101.4 million in 2016.
Several Arab countries—namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt—severed diplomatic ties with Qatar on Tuesday (June 6th) due to accusations of supporting terrorism. The increased tension in the Middle East will not significantly affect Indonesia. This is because Indonesia's trade with these five Arab countries only reached US$9.47 billion, or only 3.38 percent of Indonesia's total trade of US$280 billion.
