The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's rice imports reached 3.06 million tons throughout 2023. This figure increased by 613.61% compared to 2022 (year-on-year/yoy).

"Over the past five years, rice imports in 2023 were the highest," said Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, in a press conference on the BPS YouTube account, Monday (15/1/2024).

Pudji revealed that Indonesia's rice imports in 2023 were dominated by semi-milled or wholly milled rice. The volume reached 2.7 million tons, or 88.1% of the total rice imports last year.

Then there were imports of broken rice at 345,700 tons (11.29%), and basmati rice at 7,130 tons (0.23%).

Pudji stated that the four largest rice import origins in 2023 were Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Myanmar.

"The largest rice imports throughout 2023 originated from Thailand with a volume of 1.38 million tons, or 45.12% of total rice imports," said Pudji.

Then rice imports from Vietnam amounted to 1.15 million tons (37.47%), Pakistan 309,000 tons (10.1%), Myanmar 141,000 tons (4.61%), and from other countries 83,000 tons (2.7%).
