Based on a survey report by *Kompas* Research and Development (Litbang *Kompas*) titled "Challenges in Countering Political Polarization in the 2024 Election," several factors are identified as causes of political division or polarization, as perceived by the public.
The survey results show that 56% of respondents expressed concern about political polarization during the 2024 election.
27.1% of respondents also considered a lack of mutual respect for different choices or intolerance as the main source of polarization during elections.
"This survey shows that tolerance and respect for others' choices are the most important factors to maintain in preventing division," wrote Litbang *Kompas* in its report on Sunday (10/7/2023).
The second leading cause of political polarization is hoaxes or fake news, at 22%.
Meanwhile, 18% of respondents stated that the attitudes of political elites tend to divide society.
"Almost one-fifth of respondents believe that political polarization is caused by provocative politicians. This is further supported by another reason, namely excessive political fanaticism (16%)," said Litbang *Kompas*.
In addition, social media *buzzers* are also considered a contributing factor to political polarization, with a percentage of 6.5%.
Although the number is not very large, the presence of *buzzers* or *influencers* on social media will likely fuel political polarization in the upcoming election.
This survey involved 507 respondents spread across 34 provinces in Indonesia. The sample was randomly determined according to the population proportion in each province.
Data collection was conducted from June 19-21, 2023, using telephone interviews. The survey has a margin of error of approximately 4.35% and a 95% confidence level.
