Coffee remains a popular beverage worldwide. Data from the International Coffee Organization (ICO) shows that global coffee consumption in 2016/2017 grew by 1.9% to 157.38 million 60kg bags from the previous period. This growth in global coffee consumption has had a positive impact on Indonesia, the world's second-largest coffee exporter.
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia's national coffee exports in 2017 grew by 12.56% to 464,000 tons compared to the previous year. Similarly, the export value increased by 17.48% to US$1.18 billion, or approximately Rp 15.9 trillion. The graph below shows that Indonesia's highest coffee exports were recorded in 2013, reaching 532,000 tons.
The United States (US) is Indonesia's largest coffee market. No less than 63,000 tons, or 13% of total national coffee exports, were shipped to the US, with a value reaching US$256 million. Other major export destinations for Indonesian coffee include Malaysia, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Japan.
