The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) is the largest inter-governmental cooperation forum in the Indian Ocean, established in 1997. IORA comprises 21 member states: Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Comoros, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
In 2016, Indonesia's exports to IORA member states reached US$34.7 billion, with total trade valued at US$82.57 billion. However, this figure is significantly lower than Indonesia's export-import trade with APEC member states, which reached US$206.23 billion.
At the IORA Summit held on March 5-7 in Indonesia, 21 chambers of commerce from IORA member states agreed on an 11-point joint declaration to strengthen the role of the private sector in driving economic growth in the region. The joint declaration emphasizes, among other things, the development of the trade sector, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), reducing trade barriers, and creating better connectivity within the IORA member states.
