The Number of Growing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Jakarta: What are the Figures?

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Jakarta grew in 2019. The number reached 62,929 units, while in 2018 it only reached 37,900 units.

Details show that 50,030 units (79.5%) were micro-enterprises and 12,899 units were small enterprises. The number of MSMEs increased by more than 66% compared to the previous year, which was only 37,850 thousand units.

West Jakarta had the highest number of MSMEs, reaching 16,969 units, followed by East Jakarta with 14,187 units and South Jakarta with 13,780 units. North Jakarta had 11,078 MSMEs, Central Jakarta had 6,322 units, and the Thousand Islands had 593 units.

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises have a flexible characteristic. This means that this industry can be pursued by anyone regardless of gender, education level, and it is easy to synergize with other business actors or to switch businesses across sectors.

A total of 61,273 units (97.37%) of MSMEs in Jakarta are sole proprietorships and do not have legal entities. The remaining 2.72% of MSMEs have legal entities.

In terms of education level, 31.67% of MSME entrepreneurs in the capital are Senior High School (SMA) graduates, 26.22% are Junior High School (SMP) graduates. Then, 17.59% are Elementary School (SD) graduates and 9.3% of MSME owners are Vocational High School (SMK) graduates. Meanwhile, MSME entrepreneurs who are Diploma I/II/III/IV graduates are only 2.05% and those with bachelor's degrees reach 7.25%, while MSME entrepreneurs who did not finish elementary school reach 5.92%.
