A Polling Institute survey reveals that online motorcycle taxis (ojek online) are not the primary mode of transportation for Indonesians. In fact, the use of public transportation in the country remains remarkably low.
According to the research, most respondents (41.4%) use private vehicles. Online motorcycle taxis and online taxis are the second most popular transportation choices for Indonesians.
The survey recorded that 28.4% of respondents use online motorcycle taxis, 5.6% use online taxis, and a smaller percentage use other modes of transportation. Approximately 19.2% use a combination of transportation modes.
Previously, the government officially raised fares for online motorcycle taxis following an increase in fuel prices. In response to this policy, most people said they would continue using online motorcycle taxis, while a small percentage said they would switch to public transportation.
The Polling Institute survey, titled "The Impact of Online Motorcycle Taxi Fare Increases on Users and Drivers," states that 29.1% of online motorcycle taxi users will continue using the service. 26.6% said they would switch to their own motorcycles, 14% opted for a combination of private motorcycles and online motorcycle taxis, and only 5.3% would switch to public transportation.
The Polling Institute survey, conducted from August 16-24, 2022, targeted Indonesians aged 17 or older, or those who are married and are online motorcycle taxi users who had traveled at least one day in the past week.
From this population, a multistage random sampling method was used to select a base sample of 1,030 respondents proportionally distributed across 31 regencies/cities. An oversample of 190 respondents from the group of regular online motorcycle taxi users was then added, resulting in a total analyzed sample of 1,220 respondents. The margin of error for the base sample size is +/- 3.1% at a 95% confidence level (assuming simple random sampling).
