Australia's new Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, is scheduled to visit Indonesia on Friday, August 31, 2018. During his first overseas trip, Scott is scheduled to meet with President Joko Widodo to discuss the finalization of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) and other areas of cooperation between the two countries.
Australia is one of Indonesia's important trading partners. Data from the Ministry of Trade recorded that Indonesia-Australia trade from January to June 2018 reached US$4.07 billion, equivalent to Rp 58.55 trillion. In 2017, trade between the two countries even reached US$8.47 billion or approximately Rp 122.88 trillion, up 1% from the previous year.
Meanwhile, Australian foreign investment in Indonesia up to the first half of this year reached US$295.5 million, equivalent to Rp 4.26 trillion. This figure increased by 43.45% from the first half of the previous year, which was US$206 million. In 2017, Indonesian foreign investment from Australia reached US$514 million or approximately Rp 7.4 trillion, a surge of more than 194% from the previous year.
