Indonesia's Textile Import Volume Increases January-July 2024

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the volume of imported textiles and textile goods entering Indonesia from January to July 2024 reached 1.22 million tons, a 9.3% increase compared to the same period last year.

This figure represents the import volume of category XI goods (textiles & textile articles), encompassing HS codes 50-63. This includes commodities such as silk, wool, cotton, textile fibers, filaments, staple fibers, woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, carpets, knitted/non-knitted garments, garment accessories, and various other finished textile products, including used clothing.

The volume of Indonesian textile imports from January to July during 2019-2024 did not experience significant fluctuations, remaining relatively stable at around 1 million tons, as shown in the graph.

However, according to Temmy Setya Permana, Acting Deputy for Small and Medium Enterprises at the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, a significant amount of textile imports from China are not officially recorded in Indonesia.

"There's a large discrepancy in the HS code for finished garments. China's export data to Indonesia is almost three times larger than Indonesia's import data from China," said Temmy, as reported by Antara (August 6, 2024).

"We suspect that there are products entering illegally and are not recorded. This is specifically for clothing or textiles and textile products," he continued.
