Bali Has the Highest Number of Minimarkets Nationwide

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that Bali had a minimarket ratio of 59.7 per 100,000 people in 2019. This means there were approximately 60 minimarkets for every 100,000 residents on the Island of the Gods. This ratio makes Bali the province with the highest minimarket ratio per 100,000 inhabitants in Indonesia.

Riau Islands occupied second place with a minimarket ratio per 100,000 inhabitants reaching 35.9 in 2019. This was followed by Yogyakarta (29.1), North Sulawesi (26.6), and DKI Jakarta (24).

BPS recorded 47,868 minimarkets spread throughout Indonesia in 2019. According to a Nielsen report titled "What's Next for Southeast Asia," the growth of the minimarket business in Indonesia increased by approximately 3.2% year-on-year.

Several factors contributed to the proliferation of minimarkets in Indonesia, including the growth of the middle class and increasingly busy lifestyles. Another factor is the convenient location of minimarkets. Consumers want to spend less time reaching stores, especially in large cities.
