Indomaret, Indonesia's Largest Convenience Store Chain

In 2020, Indomaret ranked first among Indonesian retail outlets with the highest number of stores. According to a report by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), this Salim Group retail company had 18,271 outlets spread throughout Indonesia.

Alfamart held second place with 14,973 outlets. Alfa Midi, under the same management as Alfamart, had 1,761 outlets. Furthermore, Super Indo and Transmart Carrefour had 177 and 137 outlets, respectively.

Based on sales value, Indomaret had the highest sales, reaching US$5.9 billion or Rp 84.07 trillion in 2020 (exchange rate Rp 14,250/US$). Alfamart followed with sales of US$5.25 billion or Rp 74.9 trillion.

The pandemic, with its social restrictions, forced retailers to seek new business models to reach consumers. Many retail companies collaborated with e-commerce platforms, such as Shopee and Tokopedia, to improve consumer accessibility.

Companies also considered changing the hypermarket format to smaller stores to be closer to residential areas.
