Three Indonesian state-owned enterprises (SOEs) will import 50,000 tons of beef from Brazil by the end of this year. This is done to find a new source of beef supply. Data from the United Nations Comtrade shows an increasing trend in Indonesia's total beef import volume in recent years.
Indonesia's beef import volume reached 115,800 tons in 2017, then increased by 38.8% to 160,700 tons in 2018. Meanwhile, the value of beef imports in 2017 reached US$466.8 million and increased by 28.7% in 2018 to US$600.8 million. For information, beef imports have HS code 0201 (beef, fresh or chilled) and HS code 0202 (beef, frozen).
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia's total beef import volume until May 2019 reached 73,500 tons. The import value reached US$252 million.
