Indonesia still lacks many specialist doctors. This was revealed by the Deputy Minister of Health (Wamenkes), Dante Saksono.
"Many healthcare facilities still lack healthcare workers. It will take approximately 7 to 36 years to meet the needs for specialist doctors in the referral service network," said Wamenkes Dante in his press release on Monday (5/12/2022).
According to data from the Indonesian Medical Council (KKI), as of December 6, 2022, there were only around 54,100 specialist doctors in the country.
This figure includes all doctors from 47 specialty groups, ranging from pediatricians (Sp.A), surgeons (Sp.B), to dental specialists such as orthodontists (Sp.Ort) and forensic odontologists (Sp.OF).
Currently, the 10 provinces with the most specialist doctors are DKI Jakarta, East Java, West Java, Central Java, North Sumatra, Banten, South Sulawesi, Yogyakarta Special Region, Bali, and South Sumatra.
Meanwhile, the 10 provinces with the fewest specialist doctors are West Sulawesi, North Maluku, West Papua, North Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Maluku, Bengkulu, Bangka Belitung Islands, Southeast Sulawesi, and Central Sulawesi, with details as shown in the graph.
To overcome the shortage of specialist doctors, the Ministry of Health plans to increase the quota and number of study programs in medical faculties, and implement a mentoring program for Educational Hospitals (RS Pendidikan).
"This scheme is also called the Academic-Based Health System (AHS). Hospitals are encouraged to not only play a role in providing healthcare services, but also in education and research," said Wamenkes Dante.
"Later, we will form an online hospital system to improve the integration and interoperability between hospitals, so that existing Educational Hospitals can mentor other hospitals," he continued.
"In total, there will be 420 Educational Hospitals spread throughout Indonesia. Hopefully, this will be able to provide adequate healthcare services, and at the same time produce quality and high-quality healthcare workers," concluded the Deputy Minister of Health.
