According to Global Energy Monitor data, from the beginning of 2000 to the end of the first half of 2023, 2,831 coal-fired power plants (PLTU) were decommissioned worldwide.

These PLTUs, deactivated over the last two decades, had a total capacity of 460.64 gigawatts (GW).

During the 2000-first half of 2023 period, the United States (US) decommissioned the most PLTUs, with a total capacity of 153.05 GW.

Following the US are China, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, Canada, Spain, Russia, Australia, and Poland, with the details of decommissioned PLTU capacity shown in the graph.

Despite halting operations of many PLTUs, several countries on this list still have active PLTUs with globally significant capacities: China, the US, Germany, India, Russia, and Poland.

China and India even have numerous large-scale new PLTU construction projects underway.

Global Energy Monitor criticizes this, as the construction of coal-fired power plants is considered inconsistent with the carbon emission reduction commitments outlined in the Paris Agreement.

"Coal-fired power plants are the largest source of CO2 emissions from the energy sector globally," stated the Global Energy Monitor team in their Boom and Bust Coal 2023 report.

"To achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement in limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, reducing the use of coal for power generation is a crucial step," they continued.
