Visits by foreign tourists to Indonesia plummeted over the past two years due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The widespread outbreak of the coronavirus worldwide led governments globally to restrict their citizens' social activities.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of foreign tourist visits dropped by 61.57% to only 1.56 million visits in 2021. The previous year also saw a significant drop of 74.83% in foreign tourist visits.
Throughout January-February 2022, only 33,575 foreign tourist visits were recorded. This figure represents an 85% decrease compared to the same period the previous year.
To attract foreign tourists to Indonesia, the government, through the Directorate General of Immigration of the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, has expanded the scope of its policy on granting Special Tourist Visit Visas (BVKKW) and Special Tourist Visa on Arrival (VoA) (VKSKKW).
With this new policy, foreign nationals from 9 ASEAN countries can enter visa-free, while the special tourist VoA is granted to foreign nationals from 43 countries.
This is regulated in the Circular Letter of the Director General of Immigration Number IMI-0549.GR.01.01 dated April 5, 2022, concerning Immigration Facilitation in Supporting Sustainable Tourism During the Corona Virus Disease 2019 Pandemic. This new policy came into effect on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.
The tariff for the Special Tourist VoA is Rp 500,000, in accordance with Government Regulation No. 28 of 2019.
