Indonesia is one of the countries with high potential for halal tourism, considering that the majority of its population is Muslim. With the immense potential of halal tourism in the country, Indonesia has once again achieved international recognition.
In the 2022 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) ranking, Indonesia's halal tourism destinations achieved second place out of 138 countries. This is an improvement from its fourth-place ranking in 2021.
In the GMTI 2022, Malaysia retained first place with a score of 74 points. Turkey and Saudi Arabia, along with Indonesia, shared second place with the same total points, 70.
The GMTI 2022 assessment used four main indicators as benchmarks: ease of access to destinations, communication, environment, and services.
Ease of access includes visa requirements, air connectivity, and land access to destinations. Transportation infrastructure, including the quality of roads, railways, and air transportation services, is also an important metric in determining ease of access to tourist destinations.
Communication assessment includes language proficiency at the destination, while the environmental assessment considers whether Muslim tourists have a safe place to enjoy their stay.
Meanwhile, service to Muslim tourists is the most important criterion. This includes facilities that must meet the needs of Muslim tourists, including halal food, prayer rooms, and other Muslim-friendly facilities.
