Here's Why Indonesians Didn't Travel During the 2026 Eid Holidays

According to a Kompas Research and Development survey, 38.4% of respondents in major cities in Indonesia chose not to travel during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Of this group, the majority did not travel because they wanted to spend time with their families.

Here are the details of the reasons why respondents in Indonesia did not travel during this year's Eid al-Fitr holiday:

1. Choosing to spend time with family: 22.4%
2. Tourist attractions were too crowded and congested: 19.7%
3. Not planning a trip: 19.4%
4. No budget for travel: 17.4%
5. Lack of free time for travel: 7%
6. Traffic congestion on the way to tourist attractions: 5.2%
7. High ticket prices during Eid al-Fitr: 2.6%
8. Health concerns: 2%
9. Already traveled during the Christmas and New Year holidays: 1.7%
10. Not planning due to financial reasons: 1.3%
11. Unpredictable weather: 0.8%
12. Caring for a sick family member: 0.5%

The survey also found economic pressures leading up to Eid al-Fitr, which were felt by middle and lower-income groups.

Overall, 26.5% of respondents experienced a decrease in financial capacity leading up to Eid al-Fitr. Meanwhile, only 50.9% had relatively stable or stagnant finances.

This Kompas Research and Development survey involved 415 respondents spread across Medan, Palembang, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Banjarmasin, and Makassar.

Data collection was conducted online from March 6-10, 2026. The survey's margin of error was approximately 5% and the confidence level was 95%.
