The Impact of Cyberattacks on Businesses

Cyberattacks targeting information and communication technology (ICT) systems negatively impact both corporate and individual victims. Research from the International Data Corporation (IDC) indicates that the most significant impact of cyberattacks on companies is revenue loss, followed by loss of business opportunities and loss of customers. Recently in Indonesia, major cyberattacks targeted hospitals such as Harapan Kita Hospital and Dharmais Hospital in Jakarta.

According to a release from the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, these cyberattacks, which affected Indonesia and several other countries, were ransomware attacks. Ransomware is currently the fastest-growing type of malware. This malware automatically locks down the computer systems and data of the targeted company or individual. Hackers exploit this situation to extort victims, demanding a ransom to restore the computer and data to their original state. In previous cases, hackers typically demanded ransoms in Bitcoin, ranging from US$300 to US$30,000.
