Internet usage in Western Indonesia tends to be higher than in Central and Eastern Indonesia.
This is evident from a survey report resulting from a collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) and the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), entitled *Status Literasi Digital di Indonesia 2022* (Digital Literacy Status in Indonesia 2022).
The report shows that, between 12:01 PM and 9:00 PM, the proportion of respondents in Western Indonesia accessing the internet ranged from 34% to 62%.
Meanwhile, during the same hours according to their respective time zones, the proportion of online respondents in Central and Eastern Indonesia was lower, as shown in the graph above.
This is consistent with other Kemenkominfo data, which notes that provinces in Western Indonesia generally have a relatively high digital infrastructure and ecosystem index.
On the other hand, the digital infrastructure and ecosystem index of provinces in Central and Eastern Indonesia tends to be low.
Eastern Indonesian respondents have different internet usage habits.
"In Eastern Indonesia, the peak of internet access occurs in the morning, between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Meanwhile, in Western and Central Indonesia, the peak internet usage time occurs in the evening, especially between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM," stated the Kemenkominfo and KIC team in their report.
This report also notes that cumulatively in 2022, the majority, or 26%, of respondents accessed the internet for more than 6 hours per day.
Then, 24% of respondents accessed the internet for 1-2 hours per day, another 24% accessed it for 2-4 hours per day, 17% accessed it for 4-6 hours per day, and 10% accessed it for less than 1 hour per day.
Kemenkominfo and KIC conducted this survey of 10,000 internet users aged 13-70 years, spread across 34 provinces and 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia.
The survey was conducted during August-September 2022 through face-to-face interviews. Sampling was done using a multistage random sampling method, with a margin of error of approximately 0.98% and a 95% confidence interval.
Respondents had diverse backgrounds, including housewives, entrepreneurs, employees, students, farmers, and others. The complete report can be downloaded at *https://survei.literasidigital.id/*.
