Survey: Majority of the Public Aware of Digital Ethics in Social Media Use

Social media has become a platform for communication and information sharing on various issues. However, some people use social media to post negative comments or violate digital ethics.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics, together with the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), conducted a survey on digital ethics among social media users.

This survey measured internet users' awareness, example-setting, adaptation, rationalization, consideration, and development of digital ethics governance in daily life.

The survey also assessed public attitudes towards negative comments on social media, unauthorized content uploads, respecting privacy on social media, and so on.

According to the survey results, the majority of people are aware that encouraging negative comments is unethical.

This is evident from the fact that 83% of respondents disagreed and 3.4% strongly disagreed with encouraging negative comments on social media platforms they dislike.

The survey also asked about privacy on social media, such as sharing screenshots of private conversations. The results showed that a significant number of respondents (77.9%) disagreed and 3.8% strongly disagreed.

On the other hand, a considerable number of respondents tagged friends when uploading content without permission. This is evident from the 28.3% who agreed and 2.9% who strongly agreed.

Furthermore, many respondents uploaded photos with other people's children, with 34.8% agreeing and 3.7% strongly agreeing.

This survey was conducted from October 4-24, 2021, involving 10,000 respondents spread across 34 provinces in Indonesia.
