The 2019 CIGI-Ipsos Global Survey on Internet and Security Trust reports that two out of three people, or 67% of the global population, agree that the largest spread of fake news (hoaxes) is on Facebook. 65% of respondents cited social media in general as the second largest source of hoax dissemination. Furthermore, 60% of respondents identified websites as a source of hoaxes.

The CIGI survey involved 25,229 internet users from 25 countries and was conducted from December 21, 2018 to January 4, 2019. Respondents from Nigeria and Tunisia most frequently encountered hoaxes on Facebook, with 91% of respondents reporting this. In Kenya, 87% of respondents said they had encountered hoaxes on Facebook.

In Indonesia, 84% of respondents reported encountering fake news on Facebook. Only 12% had never received the spread of hoaxes on this social media platform. Meanwhile, 4% of respondents did not use Facebook.

Japan reported the lowest incidence of hoaxes on Facebook, at 14%. This is because 56% of respondents in Japan stated they do not use Facebook.
