According to a Newzoo report, the top 10 publicly listed companies in the global gaming sector generated US$126 billion in revenue in 2021. This represents a 10.2% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
Tencent topped the list. The Shenzhen, China-based gaming company's revenue rose 9.9% YoY to US$32.2 billion in 2021.
Most of Tencent's revenue growth came from international games like Clash Royale. Domestically, its revenue was largely driven by Honor of Kings.
Tencent's revenue also benefited from League of Legends, boosted by the Netflix series *Arcane*. The animated series provided viewers with an immersive experience within the League of Legends game world.
Sony ranked second with US$18.2 billion in revenue in 2021. The Tokyo-based company saw a 2.3% YoY decline in gaming revenue.
Apple came in third with US$15.3 billion in revenue last year. Microsoft and Google occupied the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, with gaming revenues of US$12.9 billion and US$11 billion.
