Southeast Asian e-commerce transactions are projected to reach Rp 1,469 trillion by 2025.

E-commerce has become the most dynamic sector of the internet economy in Southeast Asia. Based on Google Temasek research, the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of e-commerce in Southeast Asian countries is predicted to reach US$23.2 billion (approximately Rp 335 trillion) in 2018. This figure represents a 62% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) increase from US$5.5 billion in 2015 and is projected to further increase to US$102 billion (equivalent to Rp 1,469 trillion) by 2025.

In the ASEAN region, Indonesia leads in e-commerce transaction value, reaching US$1.7 billion in 2015. This value is expected to surge by 94% (CAGR) to US$12.2 billion in 2018 and grow to US$53 billion by 2025. Vietnam is projected to become the second-largest e-commerce market in ASEAN by 2025.

Three e-commerce startups that have achieved unicorn status – Lazada, Shopee, and Tokopedia – have played a significant role in the development of e-commerce in Southeast Asia. Offering tens of millions of products, mobile-friendly shopping experiences, promotional discounts, and extensive logistics networks, they have been key drivers of e-commerce growth in the region.
