Internet Access for Social Media: 88.99% of Children Aged 5 and Over

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) notes that the majority of children aged 5 and above in Indonesia access the internet for social media. The percentage reaches 88.99%, the highest compared to other purposes of internet access.

Besides social media, 66.13% of children aged 5 and above in Indonesia also access the internet for information or news. Another 63.08% access it for entertainment.

Furthermore, 33.04% of children aged 5 and above use the internet for school assignments. Additionally, 16.25% said they access the internet for purchasing goods/services, and 13.13% for obtaining information on goods/services.

Then, 13% of children aged 5 and above use the internet to send or receive emails. Others use it to access financial facilities (7.78%), sell goods/services (5.33%), and other purposes (4.74%).

Meanwhile, 98.70% of children aged 5 and above access the internet using smartphones. The remainder use laptops (11.87%), desktop computers (2.29%), and other devices (0.18%).

The widespread use of the internet among children still requires parental supervision. Because internet use can have negative impacts on children, such as cyberbullying, exposure to pornography, and so on.
