Spotify still dominates the global music streaming application market. In 2021, the number of paying subscribers to the Spotify music streaming application reached 180 million.
This figure is up approximately 16.12% compared to the previous year. In 2020, the number of premium subscribers to the Swedish music streaming service was recorded at 155 million.
The trend shows a continuous increase in the number of Spotify paying subscribers over the past five years. Furthermore, since the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of paying subscribers to this Swedish application has grown significantly.
Compared to 2017, the number of Spotify paying subscribers last year increased 2.5 times. In 2017, there were only 71 million paying subscribers to this application.
Throughout 2021, Spotify's total monthly active users (MAU) amounted to 406 million. Europe is the largest market for Spotify MAU, accounting for 33% of the total MAU. This is followed by North America at 23%, Latin America at 21%, and the rest of the world at 22%.
Meanwhile, the number of Spotify listeners using ads was 236 million. This is an increase of 11.55% from 2020, which had 199 million users.
Spotify is currently available in 184 countries worldwide. This also includes the company's launch in over 80 new markets in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and Latin America last year.
