Indonesia is the world's largest producer of palm oil.
According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), during the 2019-2022 period, Indonesia produced between 42-46 million tons of palm oil per year, equivalent to 58-59% of total global production.
Given Indonesia's strong role in the global palm oil supply chain, it is not surprising that several domestic palm oil companies possess significant assets.
According to data compiled by The Science Agriculture, the largest palm oil company in Indonesia in 2022 was Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology (SMART).
"SMART manages approximately 136 hectares of palm oil plantations in Indonesia, including plantations managed jointly with local farmer partners," said The Science Agriculture team in its report.
"In addition to agronomy, SMART also processes its harvested palm oil into various products, such as cooking oil, margarine, biodiesel, oleochemicals, and other derivative products," it continued.
By the end of 2022, SMART had recorded total assets of approximately Rp42.6 trillion, far exceeding other palm oil companies.
