How Many Social Media Users Are There in Indonesia?

Based on research by We Are Social and Hootsuite released in January 2019, Indonesian social media users reached 150 million, or 56% of the total population. This figure is a 20% increase from the previous survey. Meanwhile, mobile social media users (via gadgets) reached 130 million, or approximately 48% of the population.

The large population, rapid growth of internet and telephone users, presents significant potential for the national digital economy. As a result, e-commerce, online transportation, online stores, and other internet-based businesses have emerged in Indonesia. This will become a driving force in the Southeast Asian digital economy.

Furthermore, the Palapa Ring project, targeted for completion this year, will further increase internet penetration, currently at 56%, and social media usage in Indonesia. Palapa Ring is a 4G fiber optic network with speeds up to 30 Mbps and a length of over 12,000 km, stretching from Sumatra to Papua.
