68.65% of Indonesia's Population to Own Cell Phones in 2024, Kepri Highest

Data from the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that 68.65% of Indonesia's population owns a mobile phone.

This percentage has increased significantly compared to the 2010 data, which stood at 38.05%.

"This means that over 15 years, the population owning/using mobile phones has increased by 30.60%," wrote the BPS in the Telecommunications Statistics in Indonesia 2024.

The BPS stated that this growth is driven by several factors, such as smaller and lighter devices, making them easier to carry.

Based on demographics, in 2024, mobile phone ownership was higher among urban residents (74.15%) compared to rural residents (60.78%).

Meanwhile, the province with the highest percentage of mobile phone ownership in 2024 was the Riau Islands Province.

The following are the 10 provinces with the highest mobile phone ownership in 2024, according to BPS data:

1. Riau Islands: 83.90%
2. Jakarta: 83.43%
3. East Kalimantan: 83.10%
4. North Kalimantan: 77.50%
5. Central Kalimantan: 75.71%
6. Bali: 75.27%
7. Riau: 74.74%
8. Yogyakarta Special Region: 72.17%
9. Southeast Sulawesi: 71.95%
10. North Sulawesi: 71.70%

"In the same year, Papua Pegunungan Province had the lowest percentage of mobile phone ownership in Indonesia, at only 15.76%," according to the BPS.
