Indonesia's Internet Penetration Continues to Grow Until 2024

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), 72.78% of Indonesia's population aged 5 and above had accessed the internet in 2024.

This figure represents a 3.57 percentage point increase from 2023, when internet usage was at 69.21%. This achievement marks the highest in the last decade, as shown in the graph.

"This data reflects the increasing access and adoption of digital technology across various segments of society," wrote the BPS in its 2024 Indonesian Telecommunications Statistics report.

Despite this, internet penetration in Indonesia remains uneven. A recorded 79.13% of the population aged 5 and above in urban areas had accessed the internet. Meanwhile, the proportion is lower in rural areas, at 63.71%.

In 2024, the Riau Islands had the highest percentage of internet users nationally, at 81.30%.

This was followed by Jakarta at 87.84%; East Kalimantan at 84.44%; and Yogyakarta Special Region at 80.10%.

The lowest percentage was found in the Pegunungan Papua region, at only 6.76%. This was followed by Central Papua at 28.71% and South Papua at 48.44%.

"This shows that despite a national increase, a digital divide between regions remains a concern," wrote the BPS.
