A Surfshark cybersecurity company report reveals that many artificial intelligence (AI) applications frequently collect users' personal data.

This research examined 10 AI chatbot applications available on the Apple Store. Referencing Apple's privacy guidelines, 35 types of user data could potentially be collected by these applications.

The results showed that 40% of the AI chatbot applications were identified as collecting user location data, and 30% tracked user data.

"Tracking" refers to linking user or device data from the application with third-party data for targeted advertising, ad measurement, or sharing it with data brokers.

"This extensive data collection may be considered excessive and intrusive by those concerned about privacy and data security," Surfshark wrote in its report on Tuesday, April 18, 2025.

Gemini was recorded as the AI chatbot application collecting the most user data, reaching 22 out of 35 types of user data. This includes precise user location, name, email address, phone number, user content, contacts on the user's phone, search history, and more.

Meanwhile, Jasper AI collected the least amount of user data, only 5 types including device ID, advertising data, and others.
