According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), global shipments of personal computers (PCs) reached 63.2 million units in the first quarter of 2025.

This volume represents a 4.9% increase year-on-year (YoY) compared to the 60.2 million units shipped in the first quarter of 2024.

IDC Research Vice President Jean Philippe Bouchard explained that the growth in PC shipments during the first quarter of this year was driven by strategic moves from manufacturers ahead of import tariffs imposed by the United States (US).

“In a quarter largely unaffected by tariffs, the entire ecosystem appears to have sought to accelerate shipments to avoid the initial US tariffs and potential instability for the remainder of the year,” said Jean in his report on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

At the beginning of this year, Lenovo was the leading PC manufacturer globally, with shipments totaling 15.2 million units, a 10.8% increase.

Next was HP Inc., which shipped 12.8 million units, a 6.1% YoY growth. This was followed by Dell Technologies with 9.6 million units, up 3% YoY; and Apple with 5.5 million units, a significant 14.1% YoY surge.

ASUS PC shipments increased by 11.1% YoY to 4 million units, while combined shipments from other PC brands decreased by 3.6% YoY to 16.2 million units.

IDC noted that global PC demand remains strong this year, driven by the need for upgrades ahead of the end of Windows 10 support and demand for AI features in computer devices.

However, uncertainties surrounding US import tariffs, inflationary pressures, and the risk of a global recession are expected to negatively impact PC demand in subsequent quarters.
