Some Indonesian Citizens Still Lack Health Insurance: Here's Why

According to a Snapcart survey of approximately 1,200 Indonesians, 72% have health insurance, and 12% previously had it but chose to discontinue coverage.

Furthermore, 16% reported never having had health insurance.

"Among those who have never had health insurance, our survey identified several key barriers explaining why some Indonesians avoid it," said Haifa, Snapcart's Business Development & Corporate Marketing Associate, in her report on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

In the group that has never had health insurance, the majority, or 27%, have never used the service due to a lack of understanding of how it works.

Then, 18% have limited funds to pay insurance premiums, 14% feel they don't need the service yet, and 7% have negative perceptions about insurance services.

Another 5% believe that paying for healthcare independently or out-of-pocket is better, 3% find insurance requirements complicated, and 26% cited other reasons.

Snapcart conducted this online survey in January 2025, involving 1,229 respondents across Indonesia.
