According to research firm Counterpoint, global foldable smartphone shipments declined by 1% in Q3 2024 (year-on-year/YoY). This marks the first decline in the foldable smartphone segment's history, following six consecutive quarters of positive growth.

In Q3 2024, Samsung led the global foldable smartphone market with a 56% shipment share. However, shipments from the South Korean manufacturer corrected by 21% (YoY).

Counterpoint noted that this decline was driven by increased demand for foldable smartphones from China.

Huawei ranked second with a 15% shipment share, surging 23% year-on-year (YoY). This increase was driven by the popularity of the Mate X5 and Pocket 2, which were bestsellers in the domestic Chinese market.

Next came Honor with a 10% shipment share, jumping 121% (YoY), followed by Motorola at 7% (up 164% YoY), and Xiaomi at 6% (up 185% YoY).

Foldable smartphones from other brands accounted for a 6% shipment share, correcting by 33% year-on-year (YoY).

Counterpoint's Senior Analyst, Jene Park, explained that user satisfaction with foldable smartphones is quite high. However, their high price remains a barrier to mass adoption.

"If manufacturers seriously consider improving price accessibility, along with improving technology reliability and consumer perception, this phase can be overcome," Jene stated in the report.
