According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), global smartphone shipments in Q2 2024 reached 285.4 million units, a 6.5% increase year-on-year (YoY) compared to Q2 2023.

"There's a lot of excitement in the smartphone market right now thanks to higher average selling prices and the disruption created by AI-powered smartphones," said Nabila Popal, IDC Global's Senior Research Director, in a press release on Monday, July 15, 2024.

In Q2 2024, Samsung held a 20% share of the global smartphone market with shipments of 53.8 million units, a 0.7% YoY increase compared to Q2 of the previous year.

According to IDC, this increase was driven by Samsung's flagship products and its strong artificial intelligence (AI) strategy.

Apple ranked second, with smartphone shipments increasing by 1.5% YoY to 45.2 million units, boosted by improved performance in China and other key markets.

Xiaomi's smartphone shipments surged by 27.4% YoY to 43.3 million units, Vivo increased by 21.9% YoY to 25.9 million units, and Oppo grew by 1.8% YoY to 25.8 million units.

"Xiaomi and Vivo each experienced double-digit growth with strong performance in emerging markets and China. Oppo's growth, meanwhile, was supported by its successful continued expansion outside of China," IDC wrote in its report.

Combined smartphone shipments from other brands reached 92.1 million units, a 2.3% YoY increase.
