Although the trend of online shopping continues to grow, it seems that some local e-commerce players are still struggling to sell their products.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), of the approximately 15,000 e-commerce businesses surveyed, the most common challenge faced was low demand.

"As many as 37.65% of e-commerce businesses reported experiencing a shortage of demand for goods and services in conducting their business during 2021," said BPS in its 2022 eCommerce Statistics report.

Some local e-commerce players also feel that their businesses are hampered by a lack of capital, a shortage of human resources (HR) or skilled labor, limited internet access, limited shipping services, fraud in the buying and selling process, and other obstacles as shown in the graph.

BPS conducted this survey on 15,677 sample e-commerce businesses spread across 34 provinces and 159 regencies/cities. The survey sample consisted of businesses that used the internet to receive orders or sell goods/services in 2021.

The majority, or 41.5%, of the survey sample sold food and beverage products. There were also samples selling fashion products, household goods, cosmetics, transportation services, and other product groups in smaller proportions.
