How Many Startups Are There in Indonesia?

The rapid advancement of digital technology across various sectors, coupled with the growing number of internet users in Indonesia, has fueled the emergence of technology startups. According to the 2018 Mapping & Database Startup Indonesia report from the Indonesia Digital Creative Industry Society, the number of technology startups in Indonesia reached 992.

Of this number, 522 startups, or more than half, are located in the Jabodetabek area. The second-largest concentration of startups is in Sumatra, with 115 startups, followed by East Java with 113.

The growth of technology startups has created a multiplier effect on many Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The emergence of these UMKM startups has had a positive impact on domestic economic growth, as evidenced by the rise of e-commerce and online transportation. Four Indonesian startups have now become unicorns: Gojek, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, and Traveloka.
