The Israeli attacks on Palestine, which began on October 7, 2023, are still ongoing. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), as of December 19, 2023, 19,997 Palestinians have died as a result of the Israeli attacks.
Solidarity actions have been voiced in support of the liberation of Palestine, especially on social media. This includes the use of hashtags like #SavePalestine, the Palestinian flag emoji, and the watermelon emoji, which symbolizes resistance from the country.
Despite this, some people still support Israel. So, how has the public reacted to this?
A survey by Kurious-Katadata Insight Center (KIC) shows that the majority, or 41% of respondents, responded to supporters of Israel by trying to understand their point of view first.
Another 36.6% of respondents chose to respect the choices of those who support Israel.
However, 27.2% of respondents chose to keep their distance, and 19.4% protested against supporters of Israel.
A small percentage, 13%, tried to influence them, and 3.6% had other responses.
This Kurious-KIC survey was conducted among 2,554 respondents across Indonesia, comprising 58.9% female and 41.1% male respondents.
63.7% of respondents were from the island of Java (excluding Jakarta), followed by respondents in DKI Jakarta (15.1%), and Sumatra (13.9%). The proportion of respondents from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku-Papua ranged from 0.2% to 4%.
Data collection was conducted from November 10-17, 2023, using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method, with a margin of error of approximately 1.94% and a 95% confidence level.
