WhatsApp: Internet Users' Favorite Social Media

A We Are Social survey shows WhatsApp as the most favored social media platform among internet users worldwide. 24.1% of respondents preferred WhatsApp over other platforms.

21.8% of global respondents chose Facebook as their most favorite social media platform. This figure is not significantly different from Instagram, which was chosen by 18.4% of respondents. For information, WhatsApp and Instagram are subsidiaries of Facebook.

Meanwhile, respondents who favored other social media platforms lagged considerably behind the top three. Twitter, for example, was only favored by 4.8% of respondents.

Only 3.6% of respondents favored Facebook Messenger. Even the popular TikTok was chosen by only 3.4% of respondents as their favorite social media platform.

Three social media platforms had percentages in the 2% range: LINE (2.4%), Telegram (2.4%), and Pinterest (2.3%). 1.5% of respondents also cited Snapchat as their most favorite platform.

We Are Social, in collaboration with GlobalWebIndex, conducted this survey among internet users aged 16-64 globally, excluding China. The survey was conducted in Q4 2020 and released in April 2021.
