Data Breach Cases in Indonesia Surge 143% in Q2 2022

1.04 million user accounts in Indonesia experienced data breaches during the second quarter of 2022, according to data from cybersecurity firm Surfshark. This figure represents a 143% surge quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) compared to the 430,100 accounts breached in the first quarter of 2022.

Surfshark recorded three accounts experiencing data breaches per minute in Indonesia during January-March 2022. This increased to eight accounts per minute during April-June 2022.

Observing the trend, the number of accounts experiencing data breaches in Indonesia since the first quarter of 2020 has been fluctuating. The peak occurred in the second quarter of 2020, with 39.6 million accounts in Indonesia compromised by hackers.

The number of accounts experiencing data breaches then decreased to 669,400 in the second quarter of 2021. However, it increased again in the third quarter of 2021.

From the end of 2021 to the first three months of 2022, the number of data breach cases in Indonesia decreased again, but surged once more in the second quarter of 2022, as shown in the graph.

Globally, 2.3 billion accounts have been compromised since the beginning of 2020. The figure even reaches 5.1 billion accounts breached since 2004.
