What is Indonesia's Internet Freedom Index?

According to data from freedomhouse.org, Indonesia's Internet Freedom Index is categorized as "partly free" with a score of 46. The maximum score in this index is 100. A higher score indicates less internet freedom in a country. Indonesia's internet freedom score in 2018 improved compared to the previous year, which scored 47.

Indonesia's score has tended to stagnate in the 41-47 range. The lowest score occurred in 2013, at 41. However, in subsequent years, Indonesia's internet freedom index worsened. Consecutively, Indonesia's internet freedom index dropped to 42 in 2014 and 2015, 44 in 2016, and 47 in 2017.

Indonesia's score remains stagnant because social and political content is still blocked. The government controls social media platforms under the pretext of combating fake news, terrorism, and pornography.

Furthermore, there is still blocking of political content in Papua and applications serving the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex) community. The Electronic Information and Transaction Law (UU ITE) also contributes due to the strong penalties for individuals accused of defamation.
