The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) stated that the textile, footwear, and furniture industries will conduct mass layoffs in 2023 due to declining demand.
"Layoffs are certain to happen next year, it's not a matter of 'will' anymore," said Apindo Deputy Chairwoman Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, as reported by *Katadata*, Wednesday (21/12/2022).
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's textile export volume has weakened this year. During the January-September 2022 period, the national textile industry's export volume reached only 1.19 million tons, a decrease of 14.52% compared to January-September of the previous year (year-on-year/yoy).
The following details the export volume of the Indonesian textile industry by commodity group during January-September 2022, along with the year-on-year percentage change:
* Silk: 33.6 tons, down 44.55% (yoy)
* Spun yarn: 363,148 tons, down 28.60% (yoy)
* Man-made filament yarn/thread/strip: 113,947 tons, down 18.49% (yoy)
* Textile fiber: 44,733 tons, down 14.37% (yoy)
* Embroidered/appliqué fabric: 125 tons, down 13.13% (yoy)
* Man-made staple fiber: 463,741 tons, down 5.78% (yoy)
* Woven fabric: 88,830 tons, up 7.44% (yoy)
* Knitted fabric: 15,144 tons, up 7.46% (yoy)
* Other textile goods: 98,390 tons, down 1.77% (yoy)
Although the overall export volume decreased, the value of national textile exports during the January-September 2022 period reached US$3.38 billion, an increase of 1.61% compared to January-September of the previous year (yoy).
The following details the export value of the Indonesian textile industry by commodity group during January-September 2022, along with the year-on-year percentage change:
* Silk: US$106,800, up 78% (yoy)
* Spun yarn: US$1,177,397,200, down 9.15% (yoy)
* Man-made filament yarn/thread/strip: US$256,256,900, up 2.07% (yoy)
* Textile fiber: US$31,942,100, up 5.36% (yoy)
* Embroidered/appliqué fabric: US$2,099,000, up 8.72% (yoy)
* Man-made staple fiber: US$793,182,500, up 4.87% (yoy)
* Woven fabric: US$556,947,900, up 20.19% (yoy)
* Knitted fabric: US$102,988,400, up 17.15% (yoy)
* Other textile goods: US$467,534,200, up 4.46% (yoy)
This data indicates an increase in the price of Indonesian textile commodities in the international market. Because, although the export volume decreased, the trade value increased compared to last year.
