Extortion or bribery ("pungli") is a pressing issue that the Indonesian National Police (Polri) must immediately address. This phenomenon is noted in a report by the Indonesian Political Indicator titled *Public Evaluation of the Performance of Law Enforcement and Taxation Institutions*.
The report shows that 10.1% of respondents stated that eradicating extortion is the most important issue that needs to be improved within the Polri.
"What needs to be improved, the highest priority, is top of mind. We didn't provide answer choices; the most frequently chosen response by respondents was eradicating extortion," said Burhanuddin Muhtadi, Senior Researcher at Indikator Politik, during an online press release on Sunday (2/7/2023).
Improving the performance of Polri members followed in second place as an area needing improvement, chosen by 5.1% of respondents.
Service improvement and internal reform followed as areas needing improvement, with proportions of 4.8% and 4.2% respectively. The remaining responses are included in the graph.
Meanwhile, the Indikator survey also found that public trust in the Polri is starting to recover.
In June 2023, public trust reached 76.4%. Previously, in August 2022, public trust in the Polri plummeted to 54%, due to the premeditated murder case involving Ferdy Sambo, which captured public attention.
This survey involved 1,220 respondents selected using a multistage random sampling method.
Data was collected from June 20-24, 2023, through face-to-face interviews conducted by trained interviewers. The margin of error is approximately 2.9%, and the confidence level is 95%.
