The United States won the overall championship at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The country won the most medals, namely 39 gold, 41 silver, and 33 bronze.

The United States secured the overall championship after its women's volleyball team won the final match against Brazil on Sunday, August 8, 2021. Team USA defeated Brazil with a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14).

Before the women's volleyball final, the United States was already at the top of the standings, with an equal number of 38 gold medals but more silver medals than China. This happened after the women's basketball team and cyclist Jennifer Valente won gold medals on Sunday (8/8).

China was in second place with 38 gold, 32 silver, and 18 bronze medals. Japan was next with 27 gold, 14 silver, and 17 bronze medals.

Next, Great Britain contributed 22 gold, 21 silver, and 17 bronze medals. The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) obtained 20 gold, 28 silver, and 23 bronze medals.

Indonesia ranked 50th, winning 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals at the international sporting event. Indonesia's medals were contributed by Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu (gold), Eko Yuli Irawan (silver), and Windy Cantika Aisah, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah, and Anthony Ginting (bronze).
