Manchester United overtook Newcastle United to claim third place in the 2022-2023 English Premier League standings after defeating Chelsea. Man United triumphed over Chelsea 4-1 in a postponed match of the 32nd week at Old Trafford Stadium on Friday, May 26th, 2023 (WIB).
The four goals for the team nicknamed the Red Devils were scored by Casemiro in the sixth minute, Anthony Martial (45+5'), Bruno Fernandes (73'-pen), and Marcus Rashford (78'). Chelsea scored a consolation goal through Joao Felix in the 89th minute.
This victory brought Man United's points total to 72 from 37 matches. The Red Devils are two points ahead of Newcastle United in fourth place, which has 70 points from the same number of matches.
Meanwhile, Liverpool remains in fifth place with 66 points from the same number of matches.
Man United's victory also secured them the final Champions League spot for next season. The English Premier League has now filled its four Champions League quotas from the top four teams in this season's standings: Manchester City, Arsenal, Newcastle, and Manchester United.
With only one week remaining in the Premier League, the standings are unlikely to change significantly by the end of the season.
Manchester City has already secured the Premier League title with the highest points total of 89 points from 37 matches, while Arsenal is in second place, a significant 8 points behind The Citizens.
