Amidst the school-from-home activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has been ongoing since March 2020, the education sector still managed to record growth in the second quarter of this year.
Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at constant 2010 prices (ADHK) for the education services industry grew by 5.72% (year-on-year/yoy) to Rp 88.15 trillion in Q2 2021.
Compared to Q1 2021, the GDP of education services also grew by 6.86% (quarter-to-quarter/q-to-q), and cumulatively in the first half of 2021, it also grew by 1.99% compared to the first half of 2020 (cumulative-to-cumulative/c-to-c).
Meanwhile, the GDP at current prices (ADHB) for the education services industry amounted to Rp 140.77 trillion in the second quarter of this year. This means that the education sector contributed only 3.37% to the national GDP, which reached Rp 4,175.84 trillion.
From the expenditure side, household consumption for health and education services only grew by 1.2% to Rp 105.78 trillion in the April-June 2021 period (yoy). Compared to the January-March 2021 period, however, it contracted by 3.57% (q-to-q).
The domestic economy in Q2 2021 grew by 7.07% (yoy) and also grew by 3.31% (q-to-q). Cumulatively, the national GDP in the first half of 2021 also grew by 3.1% (c-to-c).
